Abstract:

Writing a clear and effective statement of a research problem is a critical first step for any researcher, especially for those who are just beginning their academic careers. The research problem sets the stage for the study, guiding the direction of a work and establishing its relevance. This article is aimed at young researchers, offering a structured, three-stage approach to crafting a problem statement. These stages include outlining the "ideal" situation, identifying the "problem" by focusing on the gap between the ideal and current reality, and highlighting the "consequences" of leaving the problem unresolved. By adopting this method, researchers can develop more compelling, focused, and impactful problem statements that drive their work forward. Additionally, real-world examples from various academic disciplines -economics, computer science, humanities, engineering, microbiology, finance, and medicine, are provided to help scholars across fields better understand how to contextualize their research problems within specific domains. This practical guide not only demystifies the process of writing a research problem statement, but also offers a modernized and improved approach to ensure the clarity and precision needed in scholarly research.
