Abstract:
The world is facing significant challenges related to climate change, accompanied by a continuing upward trend in energy consumption that is expected to persist in the coming decades. Consequently, effective measures are required to minimize the environmental impacts associated with energy production and consumption. This paper presents an analysis of electricity and resource consumption across selected industrial sectors within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Tuzla Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Energy efficiency (EE) has been recognized as one of the fastest and most cost-effective approaches to improving energy security while mitigating the effects of climate change. Furthermore, improving EE can strengthen the competitiveness of domestic industry and contribute to the creation of new “green” jobs, thereby supporting the transition toward a green economy. High levels of energy consumption are evident across all consumer categories, ranging from individual households to major industrial energy users, particularly SMEs. In addition, the declining costs of renewable energy technologies, electric heat pumps, and photovoltaic (PV) power plants have significantly increased the interest of SMEs, local governments, and citizens in the adoption and utilization of renewable energy sources (RES).
